RAUB – SOCIAL AND CULTURAL

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL

The area around Raub became notorious during the period of Communist armed resistance against British colonial rule in the 1940s and 50s.

This resulted in the establishment of new villagers around Raub including Cheroh (1948), Sang Lee (1948), Sungai Ruan (1948), Sungai Chetang (1948), Bukit Koman (1949), Sempalit (1950), Sungai Lui (1950), Tras (1950) and Sungai Klau (1960).

Within the main town itself, British style buildings can be found especially along Mason Road (now known as Jalan Tengku Abdullah). Most of the buildings in Raub were built during the pre-World War II era.

The Police Station of Raub is probably one of the oldest buildings in Pahang and was built in 1905. Although there are no available statistics on the town’s population, the larger district population breakdown provided by the 2010 census report is indicative of the town’s multi-racial mix with Bumiputera accounting for 63.3%, Chinese 30%, Indians 6.4% and others 0.3%.
